VOIP Voice Over Internet Protocol

Maybe you've heard about VOIP - Voice Over IP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. Said simply, the internet becomes the network to carry your phone call. The telephone company network is used to get to regular phone service customers. If you already have Cable or DSL internet service, you may as well disconnect your telephone company service and save some money.

Your Connection

Assuming you have a Cable Internet connection, your existing Cable connection looks like this:

Cable Company >> Coaxial Cable >> Cable Modem >> Ethernet Wire >> Computer

With Vonage, you get a (free) Phone Router which converts digital internet to analog phone service (and vice versa). Your new Cable connection will look like this:

Cable Company >> Cable >> Cable Modem >> Ethernet Wire >> Phone Router >> Phone Wire >> Phone

You say you already have a Wireless Modem too?

No trouble. Put your new Phone Router after the existing Wireless Router. Your new connection will look like the diagram above and as described here:

Cable Company >> Cable >> Cable Modem >> Ethernet Wire >> Wireless Router >> Ethernet Wire >> Phone Router >> Phone Wire >> Phone

Cons
There are a few reasons this service may not be good for you including:
  • a 911 call will NOT be routed to a trained emergency operator
  • a power outage may result in a loss of phone service
  • phone service requires broadband (Cable or DSL, NOT dial-up) internet service, so it probably isn't cost effective unless you already have broadband internet service.
  • for the 500-minute plan, every incoming call counts against your 500 minutes - even if not answered - so unanswered solicitor calls might add up
  • for the 500-minute plan, each call will cost a minimum of one minute - a phone company plan increment is usually 6 seconds (1/10 minute)
